Bilbaína de Alquitranes, S.A. (BASA) was created on the 28th of June, 1990, to carry on the industrial activity of Sociedad Bilbaína de Maderas y Alquitranes, S.A. (founded on the 5th of February, 1923). This last company was part of the Altos Hornos de Vizcaya (Biscay Steel Industry) and their main activity dealt with the distillation of coal tar.
The former company of the Industrial Group is FÁBRICA DE PRODUCTOS QUÍMICOS, S.A. (SANA), founded in 1952 to carry out the distillation of coal tar and its derivatives.
After Sociedad Bilbaína de Maderas y Alquitranes, S.A. was acquired and BILBAÍNA DE ALQUITRANES, S.A. was set up, an important program to invest in improvements to the company was initiated. The main milestones in this process have been:
- Purchase of the Sociedad Bilbaína de Maderas y Alquitranes, S.A. and the founding of BILBAÍNA DE ALQUITRANES, S.A. (1990)
- Reconstruction, remodeling and reorganization of the obsolete installations at Sociedad Bilbaína de Maderas y Alquitranes, S.A. (1992)
- Installation of an industrial water treatment plant. (1995)
- Installation of a Naphthalene Refining Plant. (1996)
- Adaptation of the tanks and pipes in the area surrounding the dock in order to increase BILBAÍNA DE ALQUITRANES, S.A.’s shipping capabilities. (1997)
- Improvements to the continuous distiller. (1998)
- New warehouse storage complex located in the area near the port terminal. (1998)
- New discontinuous distillation unit for the products that can be derived from coal tar. (2001)
- 2,500 tn. storage tank. (2003)
- Installation of a gas treatment system. (2006)
- Installation of a rain water treatment plant. (2007)
- Pitch solidification production line. (2008)
- Solid pitch drying production line. (2010)
